WHY I'M RUNNING
As a lifelong Davison resident, Genesee County Commissioner and active member of his community, David Martin knows the issues impacting us. After a career spent in public service, David has experience representing our community and working across the aisle to deliver results.
After attending Davison High School (class of 1979), David enlisted in the Air Force, retiring honorably as a Master Sergeant. When he returned to Michigan, David worked as security director at the Pontiac Silverdome and on several automotive corporate security teams.
David joined the Davison City Council in 2009 and the Genesee County Commission in 2016. As an elected official, David is proud to be a consistent voice for reduced regulation and smaller government.
David’s community involvements include: Veteran Services Coordinator for Mott Community College, Past Commander of Davison American Legion Post, Flint Blue Badge volunteer, Past Master of Davison Masonic Lodge, and Leadership Core at First Baptist Church, Davison. He currently serves as Command Sergeant Major, 6th Battalion, State of Michigan Volunteer Defense Force at Camp Grayling where he is CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) certified and a qualified Military Emergency Management Specialist.
David lives in his childhood home in Davison with his wife, Grace. He has four adult step-children and 16 grandchildren.
FIGHTING FOR JOBS
David wants to end job-killing taxes and regulations in order to bring better-paying jobs to Genesee County. Mid-Michigan needs to have an economy that allows people to live, work and raise a family here.
We must also encourage skilled trades training programs that prepare workers for today’s new careers. Our high schools, community colleges and tech centers should have the tools to give these opportunities to our students.
Finally, David supports the job-creating efforts to further protect Enbridge Line 5. Rep. Kennedy has advocated the shutdown of this line without offering reasonable solutions. Her policies are putting working class jobs at risk. David will fight for job creation in Michigan.
David believes parents and local school districts should be in charge of controlling their curriculum – not bureaucrats in Washington or Lansing. He supports reduced regulations on our classrooms to allow more local control over our schools
David also supports additional funding for our classrooms and hardworking teachers. While Rep. Kennedy voted against a bipartisan budget that provided record funding for Genesee County classrooms (HB 4242, HB 4728), David will continue to fight for our students.
REDUCING INSURANCE COSTS
Michigan has the highest auto insurance rates in the nation – David supported recent reforms to lower rates so you can keep more money in your pocket.
Unfortunately, Rep. Sheryl Kennedy voted against the most significant reforms providing guaranteed rate relief (HB 4397). David will continue to fight for insurance cost reductions for Genesee County.
SUPPORTING OUR VETERANS
David is a US Air Force veteran and Veteran Services Coordinator at Mott Community College, where he helps student veterans and their families take advantage of educational benefits available to them. Through David’s efforts, Mott is an award-recognized veteran-friendly school.
As state representative, David will be a supporter of our veterans and continue to ensure our service members and their families get access to benefits that recognize their dedication to our country.
FIXING OUR ROADS
Road repairs continue to be a major issue facing Genesee County. Despite these concerns, Rep. Sheryl Kennedy voted twice against record funding for our roads that did not raise taxes (HB 4246, SB 149).
David does NOT support a 45-cent gas tax increase. Instead, he’s committed to finding innovative solutions and prioritizing road funding within the existing budget.
DEFENDING OUR SHARED VALUES
David is a leader in the fight to protect life and defend our Constitutional right to keep and bear arms.
While Sheryl Kennedy has voted to support the gruesome practice of dismemberment abortion (HB 4321), David has been a strong advocate for the unborn.
David is also an outdoorsman who supports an individual’s right to keep and bear arms.
From enlisting in the United States Air Force at age 18 to my election to the Genesee County Board of Commissioners, public service has been at the heart of what I’ve done throughout my life. Being a lifelong resident of Davison, I’ve seen firsthand what policies help advance our community, and what policies have stagnated our economy.
Under Republican leadership, our economy is improving, manufacturing is on the rise and unemployment is at its lowest levels in decades.
However, during her tenure as our representative, Sheryl Kennedy has opposed lower insurance rates in auto no fault reform, opposed record funding for our local roads and classrooms, and supported dismemberment abortions. Rep. Kennedy supports policies that put working-class jobs at risk by advocating for the closure of Enbridge Line 5.
It’s time that the residents of the 48th District have someone who represents their views in Lansing.
Returning Rep. Kennedy to Lansing would get Governor Whitmer one step closer to a 45-cent gas tax hike. We have the opportunity in this election to choose a representative who values life, will protect your paycheck, and puts the people of Genesee County ahead of politics. I understand this community, and that’s why I am asking for everyone’s vote as your state representative.
